Socialist Party supporters dedicated the crushing victory to the president.

On Sunday in Venezuela, the Socialist Party of President Hugo Chavez won 20 of the countrys 23 state governorships. Jorge Rodriguez, the partys national election coordinator, dedicated the results to Chavez, who is currently recovering from cancer in Cuba. That was the peoples present for their commander, painting the country red, he said.

There have been fears among Socialist Party members that Chavez may have to step down from power due to his illness. He was diagnosed in 2011, and has had four operations to treat the condition since then. He most recently had surgery last week, but it is reported that he is recovering well and is able to give orders on the running of the country.

For Venezuelas opposition, the election went very badly, but opposition leader Henrique Capriles tried to remain positive. After retaining his seat in the state of Miranda, he spoke about the possibility of change in the South American country, saying: The moment will come, we are close.... The change is near; you can feel it in the air.
