(Travel) The Sacred City of Petra, Jordan
Western Jordan holds the key to a spectacular travel destination V the stunning city of Petra.
Petra is known to be a place of religious significance due to its connections with the Old Testament, and the nearby Ain Mousa (Spring of Moses), is thought to be the place where Moses struck water. Aaron is also said to have been buried atop the Jabal Haroun (Mt. Aaron).
The city is also full of Nabatean tombs, temples, altars, and sanctuaries built to honor their gods. There is even a Byzantine church.
Religion aside, Petra is stunning. Petra means stone in Arabic, and the red sandstone facades give this city a distinct rose colored glow at dusk. With red sandstone, hiking trails, rugged landscape and historical sights, it is considered one of the must-see places for visitors. In fact, up to 3,000 tourists visit Petra every day and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985. It was chosen by the Smithsonian Magazine as one of the 28 Places to See Before you Die.
