(Technology) Human Microchip Implants A Possibility
The FDA has approved a patent for Applied Digital Solutions, of Delray Beach, Florida, to market the VeriChip. VeriChip is an implantable computer chip about the size of a grain of rice.
Verichip can be inserted under the skin with a simple syringe, in a procedure that takes less than 20 minutes. Quick, relatively painless, and easily done with a simple injection.
Such microchips are not the things of science fiction movies or books. In fact, microchips have been used for years on pets as a means of containing user information and identification, and experts see microchips becoming a standard in humans within the next decade.
The concern, however, is what information the microchip will be used for. Many people are concerned less about the safety of the chips, and more what their purpose will be. Will they be used for tracking a persons location? Will they replace traditional forms of identification? Will they contain a persons financial and medical history? Will they be mandatory and government issued?
These, and many other questions are now being raised as people fear governmental big brother spying and infringement of personal freedom issues. While they may fast-track things such as hospital check-ins, airport security lines, etc., are they worth giving up your individual freedom in exchange?
