National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, kicked off the 16th NCKU Physical Fitness Week on April 14 to keep going a tradition of exalting green concepts and healthy lifestyle on campus for more than 15 years.

As the biggest school event in spring semester started, the campus of NCKU has been turned into a great exercise venue for visitors and residents nearby, and environmental protection awareness has been raised while the Magic School of Green Technology (MSGT) at NCKU, a zero carbon architecture, is an embodiment of eco-friendliness, said President Hwung-Hweng Hwung of NCKU.

With electricity prices set to rise, more energy-friendly measures will be taken on campus, Hwung said.

Linda Lin, director of Physical Education Office (PEO), NCKU, said her office has installed 10 power-generating exercise machines that can convert kinetic energy into electricity – part of energy conservation efforts that she said the school can do to not only reduce energy cost but also motivate students and staff to adopt a greener and healthier lifestyle.

The 7-day on-campus event includes Campus Road Race, Electricity-Producing Master Contest, Suspension Strength Training, Sports Photos Exhibition and Meeting Up with Sports Stars.

The Campus Road Race on April 14th with more than 200 community residents participating hit a record high, winning warm response from the campus as well as the neighborhood.

The latest suspension strength training called TRX Total Body Resistance eXercise, using portable physical training equipment for building up muscle and strength, will be introduced to the participants on April 17 by PEO, NCKU.

The highlight of the Physical Fitness Week will be the “Electricity-Producing Master” contest in which participants will ride on power-producing exercise machines like stationary bikes and treadmills attached to a generator.

The contest will be held on April 18 to harness the power of human exercise as a source of electricity and to raise carbon footprint awareness on campus, according to Lin.

Photos featuring sports events at NCKU are being solicited as entries by April 20 and a campaign will be held on-line for all staff members and students to vote for the best photos.

Wei-Chuan Chien, vice chairman of Sports Affairs Council, the Executive Yuan, is scheduled to deliver a speech on April 20 and professional players from Chinese Basketball Alliance are also invited to do bullfighting and PK with the students.
