(Politics)Palestinian from the West Bank Ends a Hunger Strike
Khadar Adnan, a Palestinian imprisoned by Israeli authorities without charges, ended a 66-day hunger strike after Israel agreed to release him by April. He is linked to the extremists, Islamic Jihad, and detained under a law dating back to the era of the British mandate of Israel. Israel has invoked this law over the years to hold thousands of Palestinians. As Adnans health waned, protests erupted across the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and inmates in detention centers started copycat hunger strikes.
As he neared death Adnan attracted media attention. The deal to release him relieves mounting pressure on Israel to review its detention laws. It also brings into stark relief the relative inefficiency of the Palestinian leadership, divided between the more secular Fatah faction in the West Bank and the Islamist group Hamas in Gaza.
While Adnan withered away in jail, popular outrage turned against not only Israel but also the two Palestinian camps, whose members were preoccupied with jostling for leadership of the widely discredited Palestinian Authority.
Observers likened Adnans fast to that of Irish Republican, Bobby Sands, who died in a British prison in 1981 on the 66th day of a hunger strike.
