(International) Bomb Blasts Shake Nigeria on Christmas Day

World leaders united in condemning the terrorist attacks.

Nigeria was shaken on Christmas Day by a series of bomb explosions. In Madalla, near the capital city of Abuja, a bomb went off outside a church, killing 35 people and leaving another 50 injured. Another bomb in Jos left a policeman dead, and a further explosion killed four people in Damaturu.

Abul-Qaqa, a spokesman for Boko Haram, said that the group was responsible for the attacks. The groups name means Western education is forbidden, and its fighters want to see Sharia law imposed in the country. They have clashed heavily with security forces recently and have previously conducted a suicide attack on the UN base in Abuja that left 20 dead.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan condemned the attacks. He described them as an unwarranted affront on our collective safety and freedom. World leaders joined in the condemnation. A White House spokesman said, We condemn this senseless violence and tragic loss of life on Christmas Day. French President Nicolas Sarkozy talked of his solidarity with Nigeria in the fight against terrorism. And British Foreign Secretary William Hague said: These are cowardly attacks on families gathered in peace and prayer to celebrate a day which symbolizes harmony and goodwill towards others.
