(Technology) Twitter Releases 2011s Top Hashtags

The lists show that the world is talking about a wide range of different things.

Twitter last week revealed its top hashtags of the year, and #egypt and #tigerblood came in first and second. The two topics highlight the worlds wildly divergent interests - while the top entry refers to the political trouble in the North African country, the next one was a catchphrase invented by Charlie Sheen during his highly publicized breakdown.

Hashtags are used on twitter to group together tweets about similar topics. They also make it easier for analysts to see what people are talking about. Twitter put a post on its blog saying: More than anything, these hashtag trends demonstrate how Twitter connects people with common interests. Instead of watching the news, the Super BowlK we watched them together on Twitter.

Twitter also released lists of the most popular topics in a range of different categories. The resignation of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak was the top news story. Amazingly, the top name on the music list was not Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber. Instead, it was Rebecca Black. In case youve never heard of her, shes an American teenager who released a song on YouTube. Its widely accepted that Black cant sing, but that didnt stop people watching the video or hashtagging her on twitter.
