(Travel)The Graveyard of the Atlantic

The cape on the far southeastern edge of Newfoundland Canada is a forgotten corner of the world. It is home to just two lighthouse keepers and some seals.

One hundred years ago this place, Cape Race, was a telegraph station which sent and received news and messages between Europe and New York. The messages were sent through undersea cables which was seen as a very advanced technology one hundred years ago. The rest of the world was still using Morse code.

Cape Race was the first place to receive the distress call from the Titanic on April 14th 1912 at 10.25pm. The person who received the call from the sinking Titanic was a 14-year-old boy who had been left alone to look after the telegraph station. The radio operator tried very hard to alert other ships in the area of the Titanic but was unsuccessful.

This area is now known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic because of its sharp rocks, icebergs and heavy seas. Many other boats also lie at the bottom of the sea in this region. The radio hut is now a small museum for the history of telegraphy.
